Kearney, NE — The Two Rivers Public Health Department (TRPHD) has confirmed that a bat collected within the district has tested positive for rabies. This is the 3rd bat in the 2026 calendar year. The bat was reported following contact with humans. Those involved have been notified, and appropriate follow-up, including medical consultation, is underway.
Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system. Rabies is transmitted between humans and animals through exposure to saliva and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. However, prompt medical evaluation and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) following a potential exposure are highly effective in preventing illness.
Bats are the most commonly reported source of rabies exposure in Nebraska and across the United States. Bat bites can be small and difficult to detect. Any direct contact with a bat should be taken seriously.
TRPHD urges residents to avoid contact with stray and wild animals and to take immediate action by calling our public health nurses if exposure is suspected.
